California Farmers Market is Open! Saturday, 9 AM - 1 PM (Apr - Nov)

Posted 9/27/2019 5:16pm by David Paulk.

Hello Farm Friends,

It's that time of year again when we still have summer veggies and start to have fall veggies, resulting in a cornucopia of produce! We still have tomatoes and peppers, but now have Ginger, Turmeric, Salad Mix, Turnips, Kale, Radishes, Sweet Potatoes, Irish potatoes, and much more grown organically just for you! See complete list below. Pick up your fresh veggies for the weekend and the week ahead. Fresh is best for flavor and nutrition and for supporting your local farmer!

Friendly reminder to please bring bags!

What we'll have at market tomorrow: (See photos at bottom)

- Salad Mix (new!):  Freshly-harvested salad mix is delicious and keeps a long time!

- Kale, Two kinds! (New!):  Hail to the Kale!  We have both traditional curly kale and Italian Lacinato Kale. Wonderful sauteed, in soups or eat raw in a salad or add to your smoothie for a nutritious boost!

- Golden Beets (new!):  Golden beets are similar to other beets, but are a golden color and milder in that earthy beet flavor.

- Fresh Turmeric (New!):  The queen of natural anti-inflammatory foods is here!  Bright orange and tasty grated into salads or added to vegetable dishes. Key ingredient in curries. Add to smoothies for an anti-inflammatory bonus. Delicious grated on eggs in the morning.

- Turnips, Japanese Hakurei (New!):  These are not your parents' turnips! They are crisp, white, and slightly sweet. Even better raw, than cooked!  Simply saute sliced turnips with greens and sweet onions!

- Ginger (new!): For those of you who missed our announcement last week, we have fresh ginger!  Please see description below.

- Arugula: Your favorite spicy green is back!  Of course you can eat as a salad with grated Parmesan, but try as the base for grilled salmon with a sesame-ginger dressing, or sprinkle on pizza as it comes hot out of the oven.

- Beets, Chioggia [Kee-o-ja]:  Sweet, Italian, milder tasting than red beets, with a delightfully colorful bulls-eye pattern of pink and white when sliced.

- Beets, Red:  What more can I say, except you all can't get enough. Try on a bed of arugula with goat cheese and roasted walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette.

- Lorz Italian Garlic:  Heirloom variety brought to WA state from Italy. Particularly good softneck garlic flavor.

- Romanian Red Garlic:  Hardneck garlic brought to British Columbia from Romania. Cloves streaked and lined on buff brown background. Excellent garlic flavor.  Especially high in garlic health characteristics.

- Fresh Baby Ginger: what you've all been asking for is finally here!  Freshly-harvested ginger has no tough skin.  It is baby pink and crisp-tender. It doesn't need to be peeled before grating. Naturally sweet and aromatic. Simply grate and add to any vegetable, fish, fruit dish.  Many uses. Check out Sassafras Creek Farm Recipes

- Sweet Bell Peppers, Red and Orange:  Great raw, sauteed and just the right size for stuffing.

- Sweet Oranos Peppers: We have lots more this week of your favorite orange sweet peppers! Remember, they freeze really well and are wonderful to add to dishes in the winter!

- Shishito Peppers:  Tasty, easy appetizer peppers. Simply saute until blistered, sprinkle with sea salt and serve with an ice cold beer or dry white wine.  [Last week for Shishito's; limited quantity]

- New Red, White and Blue Potatoes:  We have plenty of tasty versatile Mountain Rose, creamy white Carola and All Blue potatoes for your patriotic potato salads! If you've never eaten potatoes fresh out of the ground, well you are in for a treat. So delicious simply boiled until fork tender and served with a little butter or cut up and roasted in the oven until crisp with sea salt sprinkled on top.  See our Web site for recipes.

- Fingerling Potatoes: We have Austrian Crescent fingerling potatoes that are great for roasting whole and serve tossed hot with a little olive oil, vinegar and fresh garlic!  Instant simple potato salad.

- Red Radishes:  The nights have been cool enough to start growing radishes again!

- Bonita & Orleans Sweet Potatoes:  Bonita has light brown skin and creamy white, sweet flesh; milder flavor than the orange sweet potatoes. We also have the more traditional, very tasty Orleans orange sweet potatoes!

- Cherry Tomatoes, Sungold, Cherry Bomb and Citrine (new this year!): We have three varieties to satisfy your tastes.  All different and delicious!  Aside from great in a salad, they are wonderful in hot or cold pastas, or as a healthy snack.

- Heritage Tomatoes:  We have a mix of different brightly-colored tomatoes with wonderful heirloom flavor.

- Red Tomatoes (limited quantity):  red slicer tomatoes, perfect for salsas, burgers and just slice 1/4 inch thick and layer on a plate and sprinkle a little salt or drizzle with olive oil, maybe add a slice of mozzarella and sprinkle with basil. Summer on a plate...Yum!

We take cash, debit and credit cards.

The market has additional vegetable vendors, as well as beef, pork, chicken, eggs, local hard cider, local beer and baked goods.

So, we hope to see you, your friends and family members on Saturday (BAE parking lot, 9am - 1pm).
